FAQ
What is an exfoliant and why do you need it in your skincare routine?
An exfoliant is a product that helps remove dead skin cells, leaving your skin smoother and brighter. You need it in your routine to unclog pores, prevent breakouts, and give your complexion that healthy, radiant glow. It's like a mini spa day for your face! Ideal for those with breakouts and oily skin.
How do I add the BHA/AHA exfoliant into my skincare routine?
Easy peasy! Start by using it once to twice a week after cleansing but before moisturizing. Just a small amount will do. Gradually increase frequency as your skin gets used to it. Use up to 3 times per week. Remember, sunscreen during the day is a must, as exfoliants can make your skin more sun-sensitive.
What is a BHA and how does it work?
BHA, stands for Beta Hydroxy Acid, the most common one being salicylic acid. BHAs are unique in their ability to penetrate into the pores of the skin. This is crucial because many skin issues, like acne, start within the pores. The reason BHAs are so effective at pore cleansing is because they are oil-soluble. This means they can dissolve in oil, which allows them to penetrate into the pores, break down oil and dirt, and exfoliate the skin from within. Because of this, BHA’s help fight impurities, unclog pores, and reduce the size of you pores.
What is an AHA and how does it work?
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are water-soluble acids. AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid, and our BHA/AHA exfoliant features a blend of natural AHAs: Citric acid, Tartaric acid, and Lactic acid. These natural AHAs work together to gently remove dead skin cells, revealing a brighter and more even complexion. Their exfoliating properties help to improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance the overall radiance of the skin.
Is the BHA/AHA exfoliant from Clay And Glow suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, but always be careful with your sensitive skin! We've added chamomile extract and glycerin to the formula to make this exfoliant effective, but gentle. Chamomile is like a calm and soothing friend for sensitive skin, reducing redness and irritation. Glycerin is the hydration wizard, keeping your skin moisturized and happy. Together, they make this exfoliant gentle and friendly for even the most sensitive skin types. Although the BHA/AHA exfoliant has been tested on sensitive skin, we recommend doing a patch test to see how your skin reacts. Every skin is different!
What is the difference between a Chemical Exfoliant and a Scrub?
A chemical exfoliant is like a secret agent that uses acids (like AHAs or BHAs) to dissolve dead skin cells. It's gentle and penetrates the skin’s pores so it works on a deeper level. An exfoliant is also a leave-on treatment, and due to the acids in the formula it can make your skin a bit more sensitive to sun exposure.
A scrub, on the other hand, is a physical exfoliator with tiny particles that physically buff away dead skin. It works on the surface of the skin, it’s also a wash-off treatment meaning it will not stay ON your skin. This makes the scrub ideal for removing dead skin cells before your beach day for example!
What’s the difference between a toner and an exfoliant?
An exfoliant removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. It helps to unclog pores, improve skin texture, and promote cell turnover. A toner, on the other hand, is used to balance the skin's pH levels after cleansing and it is usually more hydrating than an exfoliant. It helps to remove any remaining traces of makeup, dirt, or cleanser while also prepping the skin to absorb the products that follow in your skincare routine. In your skincare routine, you would use the Hyaluronic Acid Toner first, then use the BHA/AHA exfoliant.
How often should I use the BHA/AHA Exfoliant?
The BHA/AHA exfoliant can be used up to 3 times per week. Make sure to not use it more than the recommended amount, since over-exfoliation can be harmful to the skin
What are signs I have exfoliated too much?
Pay attention to these signals! Over-exfoliating can make your skin cranky. Look out for redness, excessive dryness, flakiness, and increased sensitivity. Breakouts might pop up, and your skin can become more prone to sunburn. If your skin is acting up, it's time to ease up on the exfoliation and give it some TLC.
Can I combine the BHA/AHA exfoliant with the Vitamin C?
Absolutely! These two can be like a power couple for your skin. BHA/AHA exfoliants help remove dead skin cells, and Vitamin C brightens and fights free radicals. But, start slow and see how your skin reacts. Use them on alternate days or in your morning and evening routines. And always, always wear sunscreen during the day to protect your skin from potential sensitivity to the sun. It's all about finding the right balance for your skin's needs!
Can I Combine the BHA/AHA exfoliant with the Retinol?
Approach with caution! Both are skincare superheroes that CAN be used together, but they can be a bit much when used in the same routine. It's best to use them on different days or your exfoliant in the morning and your retinol at night. Overdoing it on active ingredients can lead to irritation and sensitivity. Listen to your skin, and if it's feeling a little grumpy, give it a break. Balance is key!
I have dry, flaky skin. Can I use the exfoliant?
If you have flaky skin, an exfoliant might help with removing dead skin cells, however, exfoliants can be a bit intense for dry, flaky skin. The Clay And Glow BHA/AHA exfoliant is formulated with Glycerin and Chamomile extract so it’s more gentle but always proceed with care! Start slow, like once a week, and see how your skin reacts. Focus on hydrating and moisturizing to help your skin recover. And remember, listen to your skin – if it protests, give it a break. It's all about finding the right balance for your unique skin needs!
For which skin types is the exfoliant?
Our exfoliant is designed to work for a variety of skin types. It's excellent for oily and acne-prone skin since it helps unclog pores. Dry skin types can use it but with caution and less frequency. Normal and combination skin can enjoy the benefits without much worry. Always remember, patch test, and start slowly to see how your skin responds!
Can I use the BHA/AHA exfoliant if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Safety first, mama! While many skincare products are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it's best to avoid products with active acids like BHA and AHA. These exfoliants can be absorbed into the bloodstream, and the potential effects on your baby are not well understood. Opt for gentler, pregnancy-safe skincare options and consult your healthcare provider for guidance on your specific needs. Your and your baby's health come first!

A nice texture to apply. My skin has clearly become smoother and more even.
How to use
For glowy skin, use the BHA/AHA exfoliant after cleansing. Begin with clean, dry skin. Apply a small amount to a cotton pad or fingertips, gently swiping over the face, avoiding the eyes. Allow it to absorb for a few minutes, then follow with moisturizer. In the morning, finish with SPF30. Start with 1-2 times a week, gradually increasing to 3 times weekly for glowing skin.
